Nom porté en Gironde. Variante : Garritey. On rencontre dans la même région la forme voisine Gariteau. On me signale aussi une forme ancienne Gariteai. Sens incertain : on peut penser à une variante de Caritey (= charité, nom souvent donné à des hospices médiévaux). A noter cependant à Saint-Sauveur (33) l'existence du hameau le Garit du Gay, qui laisse supposer un nom 'garit' dont le sens ne m'est pas connu.
